Why Checkout Defaults to Pickup When Delivery is Selected?

Why Checkout Defaults to Pickup When Delivery is Selected

Issue Overview

You've selected "Delivery" in the Bloom date picker and chosen a delivery date, but when you reach Shopify checkout, it defaults to "Pickup" instead of maintaining your delivery selection. This means no delivery fee is charged, and your order is set for store pickup rather than home delivery.

Why This Happens

This issue occurs when your store has only Local Delivery and Pickup enabled in Shopify, with no standard shipping methods configured.

When Shopify checkout doesn't see any shipping options, it automatically defaults to pickup - even if the customer selected delivery in Bloom.

Quick Fix: Add a Dummy Shipping Rate

The easiest solution is to add a "dummy" shipping rate that customers will never actually use:

  1. Go to Shopify Settings → Shipping and delivery
  2. Click "Create shipping zone"
  3. Add your country (e.g., United Kingdom)
  4. Add a shipping rate with:
  • Name: "Standard Shipping" (or anything you want)
  • Price: Set a high amount (e.g., £999) so customers won't choose it
  • Important: Set a very high cart total limit (e.g., £999,999) so it's never actually available
  1. Save the changes

This gives Shopify a shipping option to see, which prevents it from defaulting to pickup. Customers will still choose Local Delivery during checkout as normal.

What Your Customers See

  • Before fix: Checkout shows Pickup (wrong)
  • After fix: Checkout shows Local Delivery (correct) - customers can still select pickup if they want

Coming Soon: Automatic Fix

We're working on a feature that will automatically set your store address as the delivery address when customers select delivery in Bloom. This will solve this issue without requiring any manual setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the dummy shipping rate confuse customers? A: No - set the price very high and the cart limit very high so it never appears as an option for real orders.

Q: Do I need to change my local delivery settings? A: No - your local delivery zones and rates stay exactly the same.

Q: What if I already have shipping rates? A: You likely won't see this issue if you already have standard shipping configured.
